Sharadiya Navratri Durga Ashtami 2025: Date, Muhurat, Kanya Pujan Timings, Color, Rituals, Mantra & Significance
- Durga Ashtami, also known as Maha Ashtami, is the eighth and one of the most significant days of the Navratri and Durga Puja festivals in the Hindu calendar.
- Durga Ashtami marks the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura, symbolizing the destruction of evil and the triumph of good.
- The eighth form of Goddess Durga, worshipped on Durga Ashtami, is Maa Mahagauri.
- It occurs during the Shukla Paksha (bright lunar fortnight) of the Ashwin month. On this auspicious day, devotees worship Goddess Durga in her powerful Maha Gauri form, honoring her victory over evil and the restoration of righteousness. She is revered as the embodiment of purity, serenity, and divine forgiveness.
- According to Hindu mythology, Mahagauri means “extremely white,” signifying her radiant, flawless beauty and glowing complexion, which is said to resemble the moon, conch, or jasmine.

- Mahagauri rides a white bull named Nandi and is usually depicted with four hands—two holding a trident and a damaru (drum), while her other hands show the gestures of fearlessness and blessing.
- Mahagauri’s legend is closely linked to Parvati performing intense penance for Shiva. After years of austerity, Shiva is said to have cleansed her, giving her a luminously white form.
- On Durga Ashtami (Navratri Day 8), devotees honor Mahagauri by offering white flowers, coconut-based sweets, and by wearing pink or white clothes to symbolize affection, harmony, and purity.
- Mahagauri is believed to cleanse the hearts of devotees, absolve them from all past sins, and grant peace, prosperity, and spiritual advancement.
- Worshipping her on Durga Ashtami is considered especially powerful for personal transformation and the fulfillment of sincere wishes.
- Celebrated with great devotion across India—especially in West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, and parts of North India—it honors Goddess Durga as the embodiment of Shakti (divine feminine power) and marks the triumph of good over evil.
