Significance

- Parivartini Ekadashi is symbolically named after the act of Lord Vishnu turning (parivartini means ‘turning over’) from His left side to His right side while resting on the serpent Shesha Naga in the cosmic ocean during his yogic sleep (Chaturmas). This turning denotes the transition and transformation marking a significant spiritual moment.
- Observing this Ekadashi is believed to absolve all sins, bring fortune, health, and spiritual liberation.
- The vrat is associated with the story of King Bali and Lord Vishnu’s Vamana Avatar, highlighting surrender, devotion, and divine grace
Rituals and Customs: Puja Vidhi (Worship Procedure):
- Begin the day early with a holy bath and purification rituals.
- Set up a clean altar with an idol or image of Lord Vishnu decorated with yellow flowers, sandalwood paste, and tulsi leaves.
- Light lamps and incense to create a sacred ambiance.
- Offer fruits, milk, sweets, and other vegetarian food as Naivedya (offering).
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranama, Vamana Stotra, and the mantra “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.”
- Perform Aarti of Lord Vishnu with devotion.
- Donate to Brahmins, the needy, and cows, as charity is considered highly auspicious on this day.
- Observe a Nirjala fast (without water) or consume only fruits and milk according to one’s capacity.
- Fasting is observed strictly with full devotion and followed by breaking the fast during the auspicious Parana window on the next day.
Vrat Katha (Legend):
According to scriptures, Parivartini Ekadashi is linked to the story of King Bali and Lord Vishnu’s Vamana avatar. King Bali was a mighty yet devoted king who was blessed and pardoned by Lord Vishnu due to his sincere devotion. The vrat of Parivartini Ekadashi is believed to bring similar mercy and forgiveness for the devotees. The fast and worship on this day thus help cleanse past sins and accrue spiritual merit.
According to Hindu tradition and scriptures:
- Listening to the vrat katha (story), worshiping Lord Vishnu properly, and observing a sincere fast on Parivartini Ekadashi is believed to destroy all sins accumulated over many lifetimes, grant peace of mind, wealth, health, spiritual growth, and ultimately lead to salvation.
- The scripture says those who worship Lord Vishnu on this Ekadashi receive the blessings of the three principal gods—Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva)—and become deserving of heaven.
Thus, Parivartini Ekadashi’s capacity to destroy sins is rooted in the divine lore of Lord Vishnu’s turning, the exemplary devotion of King Bali, and the spiritual merit earned by sincere fasting and worship on this day
Regional Variations
- In North India, the day honors Lord Vamana and his protection. South Indian practices sometimes mark this as Vamana Jayanthi.
- Despite regional differences, the core traditions focus on surrender, transformation, and charity.
Parivartini Ekadashi represents a spiritual turning point during the holy months, emphasizing fasting, devotion, and charitable actions for the welfare of all.
