Ganesh Visarjan Rituals:

-
- Perform a final Aarti and Puja with family and friends, singing devotional songs and offering prayers to Lord Ganesha.
- Distribute Prasad like modaks, laddoos, and fruits among everyone present.
- Decorate the idol with fresh flowers and garlands as a mark of respect for the last time.
- Conduct the Visarjan Puja, which includes chanting mantras, sprinkling rice and flowers, and applying sindoor (vermilion) on the idol’s forehead.
- Chant Mantras & Aartis with prayers such as “Ganpati Bappa Morya” during the procession to the immersion site.
- Carry the idol to a water body (river, sea, lake, or tank) in a colorful procession with music, dance, and chanting.
- At the immersion spot, perform the ritual to immerse the idol carefully into the water, symbolizing Lord Ganesha’s return to his celestial abode.
- Do not look back after the immersion as a sign of respect and final farewell.
- The ritual symbolizes the spiritual farewell of Lord Ganesha, the removal of obstacles, and the cyclic nature of life preparing for new beginnings.
Traditionally during Ganesh Visarjan, the following Mantras and Aartis are recited:
Mantras:
- “Aum Shri Ganeshaya Namah” — a general salutation offering respect and devotion.
- “Aum Gan Ganapataye Namah” — a powerful mantra to invoke Lord Ganesha’s energy and remove obstacles.
- “AumVakratunda Mahakaya, Suryakoti Samaprabha, Nirvighnam Kurume Deva, Sarva-Kaaryeshu Sarvada” — a prayer asking Ganesha to remove all obstacles.
- Ganapati Atharvasirsha Mantra — a sacred hymn recognizing Ganesha as the ultimate reality.
Aartis:
- “Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva” — a devotional song praising Ganesha’s form and his role as remover of obstacles.
- “Sukhkarta Dukhharta” — a widely sung aarti highlighting Ganesha’s qualities as the bringer of happiness and remover of sorrows.
- “Ganpati Bappa Morya” — a traditional chant repeated during the procession and immersion, expressing devotion and farewell.
“During the Visarjan, family members perform the Aarti singing these songs together, followed by chanting the mantras while immersing the idol to symbolize Ganesha’s return to his celestial home with obstacles removed from devotees’ lives.”
After returning home from Ganesh Visarjan, the following Post-Visarjan Customs are traditionally observed:
- Perform a thorough cleaning of the area where the idol was placed and the worship space to maintain sanctity and remove all remnants of the rituals.
- Dispose of leftover flowers, rice, and other organic offerings respectfully, preferably in an eco-friendly manner.
- Take a bath and change into clean clothes as a ritual purification after returning from the immersion.
- Distribute leftover prasadam (offering food) among family and friends to share the blessings.
- Avoid Major Cleaning or Renovation activities on the festival day to maintain the auspicious atmosphere.
- Open windows and ventilate the home to clear any incense or ritual odors.
- Carry on with daily routines with positive energy, maintaining the spiritual upliftment gained during the festival.
These customs help preserve the sacredness of the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations while marking a respectful closure to the Visarjan ceremony and preparing the home for everyday life.
