The Story of Varuthini Ekadashi
A time ago King Mandhata ruled a land that was very rich.. Then a sage put a curse on the land and it was hit by a famine. The people were very hungry. The king went to Lord Vishnu for help and observed Varuthini Ekadashi with a lot of devotion. He fasted strictly and kept saying Lord Vishnus name. The curse was. It started raining again. The land became rich again. This story from the Padma Purana teaches us that if we observe Varuthini Ekadashi with a heart our difficulties will end and we will get moksha.
Importance of Varuthini Ekadashi
The Varuthini Ekadashi vrat destroys our sins fulfills our wishes and protects us from big problems. It is especially very powerful in Kaliyuga.
Rules for Fasting
- We should eat fruits, milk and nuts. We should not eat grains, lentils and onions.
- We should fast until the sun sets. If we are weak we can fast partially.
- The main mantra is “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”.
Pre-Dawn Preparations
- Wake before sunrise for a holy bath using Gangajal if available.
- Clean the puja area, sprinkle Gangajal, and set up a clean altar with Vishnu, Lakshmi, or Vamana idols.
Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi
- Offer Arghya to Sun God with copper vessel.
- Worship Ganesha with Panchamrit bath, clothes, Durva grass, and laddoos.
- Place Vishnu idol; apply Chandan tilak, drape yellow clothes, add flowers and Tulsi leaves.
- Light ghee diya, incense; offer Panchamrit, fruits, homemade sweets like Kesar kheer.
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranama, Bhagavad Gita, or Ekadashi Mahatmya; chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.”
Things to Do and Not to Do
- We should do charity meditate and read scriptures.
- We should not eat grains, meat or drink alcohol.
- We should not. Fight with anyone.
- We should not eat much after the fast is over.
- We should sing bhajans in the evening.
Evening Observances
Perform aarti, listen to Vrat Katha with family, and do Hare Krishna kirtan. Donate food, clothes to needy or Brahmins for amplified merits.

- Maintain Nirjala or Phalahar vrat avoiding grains; break tomorrow 6:54-8:31 AM IST.
- Offer simple bhog like Purni or fruit before eating.
